Dr. Slump returns!
… well, kinda. Yesterday while riding the local train home, I came across this overhead banner advertisement for the re-release of the Dr. Slump comics! Issues 1 and 2 came out yesterday and I wish I knew earlier as I was hanging out near a good few manga shops yesterday.
It seems like the comics are just reprints of the originals from the 80s but with a new cover design/illustration. If that is the case, I won’t be needing these cuz I have every issue of the 80s original anyway (bought them here in Tokyo from used book stores). I mean, these reprints cost ¥1,100 each - not so cheap.
I also realised to the right of the poster, it also mentions DVD box set and has a URL. Upon checking the website, it seems they will also release all 243 episodes of the orginal cartoon on DVD next year! Reservations by 2007 January 8 (March 23 release) for the first box set which contains the first 120 episodes. Reservations by 2007 July 2 (September 14 release) for the second box set containing the other 123 episodes. But damn, each set costs ¥105,000! But still totally worth it especially considering you get a set of figures too!
Also, the cartoon will aire on Fuji TV from October 20, every Friday at 3:28pm! Though, I’m not sure if it is the original series from the 80s or the newer re-illustrated/animated version from 1997 (1998?). Oh well, we’ll find out soon enough.
Btw, if you didn’t already know, Dr. Slump is my all time fav cartoon. My old blog’s name, HOYOYO, came from the main character, Arale. This cartoon is also one of the main reasons as to why I fell in love with Japan from my early childhood days…

I know you’re excited but think logically… why would Japan’s release dub it in Cantonese? Wouldn’t dubbing in English make more sense? So the anwer is an obvious NO (^_-)
You can always try Hong Kong tho. It’ll probably be dubbed (or at least with subtitles) and you’d probably be able to find a set of “faan baan” for a few hundred HK dollars as opposed to the original’s asking price of US$2,000 (all 243 episodes).
I take it you watched the original canto version from the 80s right? If HK does decide to release this Box Set, chances are it will get re-dubbed, which means if you remember all the characters original voices from back in the 80s (especially Arales), you’d probably be disappointed with the new voices. I know I definitely would be…. (-_-;)

i feel that the new dr.slump cartoons are not very good at all, i dont’ like the doreamon movies neither.

oh, and i just bought 3 dr. slump dvds in cantonese yestereday. but it’s $8 USD per episode. maybe it’ll be cheaper in guang zhou. i’m begging my mother to sneak ‘em home to me in the states.
