MEDIA SKIN
KDDI AU Design project’s MEDIA SKIN cellphone by heavyweight Japanese designer, Tokujin Yoshioka, is about to be released on AU’s network and is one of only a few designer cellphones I actually like (I like talby and INFOBAR 2).
I’m totally digging the simplistic design here – flat with clean lines and great choice of a simple matt-textured plastic. I don’t quite like the flip panel opening up like that to reveal the keypad though but I guess there was no simpler way to do it. Spec-wise, just like most of the other AU designer cellphones that have come before (if not all), are pretty bog-standard with nothing worth raving about. Afterall, it’s about the industrial design (but I wonder what is stopping the latest and greatest technologies from being packed into these designer celllphones)…
DoCoMo is also about to release the second version of top art director, Kashiwa Sato‘s cellphone design, the N703iD, something that looks literally identical to the first version (N702iD). Sadly, it’s not something I’d really categorise as cool looking…
