Help: iMac G5 dozing off!

imac.jpgI have a 20-inch iMac G5 2.1GHz (iSight) and for the last two days, the computer just goes into sleep mode while I’m frikkin’ working on it! Usually, sleep kicks in if the computer has not been active for about 1 hour, a setting I always had.

But for the last day or two, sleep kicks in whenever it feels like! It happened twice just now, within 3 minutes apart. Both times while in the middle of saving a file! I’ve already repaired permissions and the disk but it didn’t solve the problem (I’ve also repaired the permissions through ‘Terminal’ (sudo diskutil repairPermissions /) rather than just through the ‘Disk Utility’ app).

I found a few topics on the net regarding this problem but there seems to be no solution! People have even sent in their Macs to have the logic board replaced, etc., to no avail! Btw, my warranty has ran out therefore sending it in and paying to get it repaired is not ideal especially considering it doesn’t fix the problem!

Any solutions? Or point me to a website that has? Thanks in advance!

Did you update to 10.4.9? My Intel iMac’s sleep functions have been very sensitive to problems since 10.4.9; I’ve had to do troubleshooting several times since the update. I’m beginning to question if I should try reinstalling using the combo update. Not sure if that would help your G5… If I come across anything interesting I will let you know.

Yep 10.4.9. I’ve been on this since it came out (via software update) and never had a problem.

I think maybe because I’ve been pushing Photoshop in the last 2 weeks (literally, non stop) therefore the computer has become hot. Some have mentioned, when the computer gets hot, the system activates some cooling measures including putting the comp to sleep…

A friend of mine was having the same problem last year in the summer (also in Tokyo), he says it was due to the heat

I have a pre-intel 24 inch imac that goes to sleep all the time - its had a motherboard replacement/fan replacement .. nothing has worked. its definitely heat related - in summer it does it constantly.

My small intel imac has no problem - but I have just bought a 24 inch intel & noticed is it running mega-hot

I HAVE NEVER HAD AN ISSUE WITH THIS BEFORE WITH APPLE

I have been a mac user since the mac classic & these models are the only ones with heat issues that I have ever known

Hey, I’ve got a 2.1 ghz iMac iSight and I’ve been having the same problem of the unwanted sleeping recently when doing heavy rendering. I am guessing it is an overheating problem. People seem to suggest everything from cleaning out the dust to getting various parts replaced. Wondering what temp your iMac runs at normally? Mine is about 55-65 C. When rendering it goes to 80-87. Not good as I beleive 85 is the suggested MAX.

Let me know if you were able to fix your problem!

    Hey all…

I’ve got the same frustrating issue. I just tried creating a new user account, and so far I have had no problems since then. I still don’t understand what’s causing the “overheating”… but this seems to be working.

I had the same problem. The hardware test showed some problems: error code 2STH/1/2:CPUT-Diode
I did reset the SMU (see link below) and the hardware test is not showing any errors.

Check this link and follow the instructions. I hope this will work out for you as it did for me. Good luck!
