What’s “Star Wars” Again? This Guy Never Saw It

The title is indeed referring to moi and it is the title belonging to a ‘Star Wars 30th Anniversary interview‘ which I recently did for E! Online (thanks Joal).

Here’s my original blog entry which somehow got the interview started.

    Eddie,

You have an open invitation to come over to my house and watch all six Star Wars films where I will explain all the wonderfulness that is Star Wars.

    Edward 2007 May 26th 1:24 am

My fiancee has never seen ANY of the Star Wars movies. Not even one minute of all six movies. Oooh… ^o^

So there you are. It’s the weekend and a friend has offered to share a modern classics with you. If that doesn’t make for good weekend, what does.

    Bertilla 2007 May 26th 2:23 am

    Hi Eddie,

I just read the article about you on E!Online. I didn’t see any of the Star Wars movies til Episode 2 because I got free tickets. I saw Episode 3 because I thought, “What the heck, may as well finish it off.” As for all the other installments, I’ve only seen bits and pieces like you.

I’m glad E!Online specifically said that you didn’t live under a rock because the arrogant American media/public tends to assume that. I managed to catch up on all Star Trek movies even though they were ahead of my time, so maybe Star Wars just didn’t interest me. Maybe the movies were just not that good. :P

    Douzo ogenki de,
    Bertilla

That’s alright, there’s much more import to this world and our lives than movies! Star Wars is an incredibly entertaining and at times prophetic franchise, but it ain’t LIFE!
    Cheers from Seattle
(a reader who has seen all 6 movies many times over)
(a reader who didn’t see Titanic until, what, 2002?)

    Sheri Hale 2007 May 26th 4:23 am

    Hey Eddie,
I am one of those who hasn’t seen the film either. Any of the star wars films, for that matter. My husband is a major fan and has tried to “force” (no pun intended) me to watch….but ho hum is how i felt. I feel the same way about the Lord of the Rings, too.

Nice article I read about you, though. Maybe you can watch the movie and give a review? Just a thought.

    Take care,
    Sheri Jo

    Alex 2007 May 26th 4:25 am

Watch Star Wars, you heathen! I highly recommend it!

    TJ. Church 2007 May 26th 4:29 am

I’m 24, & see a rough average of 3 new movies a month. I’ve never seen an entire “Star Wars”, & walked home from my next-door neighbor’s house in the middle of us watching “Ep. 1: Phantom Menace”.

However, I’ve also never seen a “Star Trek” movie, “Jurassic Park” (not even sure I spelled it right), “Rocky”, “Rambo”, “Terminator”, or “Titanic”, so I may have you beat on some of those.

    Jeffery Keown 2007 May 26th 4:31 am

It’s okay that you’ve never seen it. Don’t be swayed by the folks who rail at you for it. I’m a fan, sure, but I’m a bigger fan of doin’ your own thing! You Rock!

    oudie 2007 May 26th 4:31 am

I never saw it either, when the first remake came out all my friends were so excited they camped out to get the first tickets to watch it at the theaters and they didn’t go to school. I never understood the facination with the movie… I never saw E.T. either, but always planned to, still haven’t though.
I was a buck rogers watcher growing up though..

    beck 2007 May 26th 4:32 am

I haven’t seen more than about 10 minutes of the first Star Wars movie. I don’t think that makes me an oddity, just not someone who likes Sci-Fi and doesn’t like to jump on bandwagons. I think my original turn off to the movie came about when a coworker who was also on welfare let her son see it 25 times when it first opened. Lost my appetite for it then.

    shirley queenen 2007 May 26th 4:41 am

I have never seen Star Wars either like eddie bits and pieces and i do not have a desire to watch it either. i was liek eddie 2 when it came out and didn’t watch it then and probably wont ever watch it.

    Craig 2007 May 26th 4:44 am

I’ve also never seen Star Wars…heck I tried watching Episode 1 when it came out on VHS (oh yer!!) but fell asleep!! (All i can remember was a fish…spikey fish ship..) And yea just like many people, it just doesn’t appeal to me. Sure, millions (even billions) love the films so much that it has become a religion (Jedi right) but at the same time not everyone has to like it.

The same can be said with football (or soccer) Billions watch it but still millions hate it. Why isn’t Star wars considered like that?

    Gerry McT 2007 May 26th 4:46 am

    Eddie,
Like you, I have never watched “Star Wars”. At one point, I was hoping they would show all of them at the drive-in. Well, the drive-in has gone the way of the 8 track tape. I was also turned off after a few of them were released and found out they were not in order. I watched ‘Space Balls”, does that count?

    Mary/Diz 2007 May 26th 4:48 am

I’ll be 41 in a few weeks & I’ve never seen Star Wars – what makes that amazing is I have a 16 y/o son who is a Star Wars fanatic & has seen all 6 many times over & can tell you major facts about the movies & the stars – he must have gotten the bug from Dad.

Guess maybe it’s time I sit down & watch now that the 30th anniversary of the first released Star Wars is happening! :o )

    Kelly 2007 May 26th 4:53 am

    Hi Eddie,
I just wanted to say,you not alone!
I never even heard of it until about
    2-3 years ago on Legos!!!
I’m not really into space type movies…
I really don’t know quit frankly what it’s
    about(Star Wars).

    From,
    Some random person

    Mary/Diz 2007 May 26th 4:53 am

Should have mentioned my 16 y/o son who is a Star Wars fan is also a brillant autistic & was heartbroken when the last movie came out.

    KiP 2007 May 26th 4:54 am

I didn’t see it until the Special Edition hit theatres in 1997. So that’s when I finally relented and saw that and Empire Strikes Back. Meh. Not for me. Never cared for sci-fi flicks (what’s the big deal with E.T. and The Matrix?) Still haven’t seen Return of the Jedi or the prequels. Don’t plan on anytime soon either; I figure all I need to know about these movies I get from Kevin Smith flicks.

But I’ve also seen Spaceballs! And one of the Star Treks (Part IV, I think – the one with the whales).

    Yolanda 2007 May 26th 4:55 am

    Dear Eddie,
Dont feel bad at all I am 36 years of age and I have never seen Star Wars and I don’t desire to either. There is something rather unattractive about the movie and the wardrobing.

    Kelly 2007 May 26th 4:59 am

    Oh yea just forgot
I never saw Pirates of The
    Carribean either…I saw
    Titanic about 2 times before.

    Lydia 2007 May 26th 5:14 am

HEY, I DONT KNOW WHY THEY ARE MAKING SUCJ A BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS MOVIE, GRANTED I HAVE NEVER SEEN IT, BUT LIKE SOMEONE ELSE MENTIONED….IM JUST NOT ATTRACTED TO IT……I ALSO HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY OF THE PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN MOVIES…….TOO OUTLANDISH FOR ME.
I DONT THINK THAT JUST BECAUSE I HAVENT SEEN STAR WARS THAT IM NOT A MOVIE FANATIC……BECAUSE I AM.
    MOST SEEN MOVIES FOR ME:
    SCARFACE- 15+ TIMES
    TITANIC- 4 TIMES
    NOTEBOOK- 5 TIMES
    COLOR PURPLE- 4 TIMES

    Quentin 2007 May 26th 5:22 am

    Hey
I’ve never seen an entire star wars movie either. Sure, I’ve seen bits and pieces of some, and about a fourth of one of the old ones (dont remember which one), but whatev. I guess I just never got into it like some of my friends did (and the rest of the world! haha). But I dont live under a rock either. Ive seen all the pirates movies, LOTRs, spidermans, etc etc tons of other movies, just never got into the whole Star Wars thing. I guess seeing adults skipping work to sit on a sidewalk for 2+ days just to see a movie (in a plastic costume nonetheless) makes it seem ridiculous and makes me not want to see it more.

    Danyelle 2007 May 26th 5:48 am

I haven’t seen it either and I was born in 1977… shhhhh, don’t tell anyone!

    Jason Wilcox 2007 May 26th 6:39 am

If you haven’t seen a Star Wars film in your entire life, you need to get out from the rock you live under and watch one. You say you like movies? Hate to tell you this but only the most pathetic dorks spank it to Japanese cartoons.Have you guys ever had sex with women before? Either you have no passion for life or you are just plain stupid, don’t waste your time watching any creative, philosophical, cinemagraphically mind-blowing movies now, it’s too late for you. You might as well just take a light saber and fall on it.

    Freddy 2007 May 26th 7:00 am

    RE: Jason Wilcox

Just because someone has never watched Star Wars doesn’t mean they are living under a rock and how can you say japanese cartoons are for the most pathetic dorks? Surely dorks are well known for their love of Star Wars and Star Trek at big nerdy Star Trek and Star Wars conventions? They dress up and treat Star Wars like a religion and take the fad waaaaaaay too far…

Maybe you should get back to reality and stop thinking light sabers are real…

(P.S Star Wars isn’t creative, ever think that Star Wars Ep4 was made like 20 years before the next Ep1?)

Maybe it’s time YOU should watch some “creative, philosophical, cinemagraphically mind-blowing movies now.” AND original.

    eddie 2007 May 26th 2:30 pm

Wow, so many people have not seen Star Wars too. Thanks for making me feel ‘normal’… hahahahaha

I’ve seen some blog entries and comments on other sites regarding the E! Onlne article saying things like: “Who the heck is Eddie Wong, never heard of him”, “Why is this even relevant?”, “Nothing newsworthy to write about?”, “What a waste of a page”, etc., etc.

Well, free world, free speech. Point is: it is Star Wars 30th Anniversary. Every entertainment and news site needs to write something about Star Wars. And let’s face it, probably every single one of these sites will be talking about “how great the movie is”, “what it means to the population”, “what a brilliant man Lucas is”, “how many trillions of dollars its made”, etc., etc. Read one site, you’ve read them all. Not to mention, probably a lot of people already know the Star Wars facts anyway (the same things have probably been written for the last 30 years!). So, what is so newsworthy repeating the same stuff on every entertainment website? You gotta give Ms. Ryan credit for trying something different regardless if its newsworthy or not to some. And who is to judge if an article is newsworthy? A million different things to a million different people, right?

Personally, it doesn’t matter who Eddie Wong is, the interview could have been written on any of the others whom have commented on this entry claiming they too have not seen Star Wars such as Bertilla, Sheri, TJ. Church, Oudie, etc., etc. (it just so happens that a few weeks earlier, I had written an entry about not being interested in Star Wars thus being picked up by google’s search results). Bottom line, the article doesn’t repeat what the other billions of sites are talking about – its original. To be honest, I’d really enjoy the article even if it was something like “Paris Hilton embosses the words ‘Star Wars’ on her favourite $20,000 Chanel bag“…

And what’s with the last 2 comment authors? FREDDY Vs JASON? Hahahahah… (for the record, I’ve never seen that movie either and don’t intend to).

    rick 2007 May 28th 7:55 am

I read an article somewhere that said that in England a census was taken and Jedi was like ranked 4th most popular religion in the country. Funky.

    alafista 2007 May 29th 12:03 am

haha .. you know my supervising professor is also named eddie like you but hes a hardcore star wars fan.

    Patrick 2007 May 29th 11:08 am

I’m right there with you Eddie! Seen plenty of movies, even a lot of SF too, but Star Wars? I never felt much of an interest.

For some reason I’ve seen the parody Spaceballs several times though.

    johnnie 2007 May 29th 3:39 pm

Maybe if I’d actually sit down and watch 1 or all 3 of the original movies, I could actually remember if I’d seen it/them. I, too was born in ’77 and was too young to remember what I’d seen or caught in a commercial. The first movie in a theater for me was E.T. (not sure if a Star Wars movie came out that year or not). While growing up it wasn’t like the movies were shown on movie channels or regular TV to ‘happen to catch them’. I only know the well-know things about the movies – Darth/Luke, Luke/Lea, Hans(Harrison), Darth(James Earl Jones). Like Eddie Wong, I’m more intrigued by UltraMan, and I grew up on the East Coast. I, too have seen SpaceBalls and at least got the perverted jokes in that movie. Now my 5 year old son has this lure to the ‘newer’ Star Wars movies and seems to make a big fuss over them. I just come back with that those movies ‘are no big deal – get over it’, to my 5 yr old. Maybe I’ll sit down with him one day and watch them – at least he can say he saw them with his Dad. Now I’ve told the world. Thanks Eddie.
