Pepsi Ice Cucumber

That’s right folks, another new bizarre soft drink on the Japanese market. And indeed just like the title suggests, it is soda which tastes like… cucumber.

This mint-coloured soda, ‘Pepsi Ice Cucumber/ペプシアイスキューカンバー‘, hit the market yesterday. It does not actually contain any cucumbers - just artificial flavourings resembling the veg’s taste (you didn’t expect chunks of the veg in the drink, did you?). The drink is available only in Japan and will only be sold during this summer. A 500ml bottle will set you back ¥140.

“We wanted a flavor that makes people think of keeping cool in the summer heat. We thought the cucumber was just perfect”, says a Japanese Pepsi/Suntory executive. Perfect??? Hmmmmmm… dunno where this person got that from. Personally, ‘cucumbers’ would be the last thing I would ever think of in this world to keep cool during the summer heat…

Anyway, maybe it’s just me but this ‘cucumber soda’ tastes like anything but cucumber. Tastes more like melons-gone-wrong… . In short, very chemical-ly.

ewww … I’d think watermelon would be a better choice for taste if they want to remind people of keeping cool in the summer.

I never liked pepsi though, I’m all the way coke.

    Me too! Coke rocks!

Since cumbers are like 95% water anyway, why not just eat the actual vegetable?

Err… Brendan, the marketing department at Pepsi would appreciate it very much if you would please stop making sense like that!

The wife says that it’s actually scientifically proven that eating cucumbers cools your body down. Why they don’t use the real thing in the ingredients is the real question. :)
