Drum Machine

I’ve already blogged about this animation a few years back on my old site but because I absolutely love it (even as of today), I decided to mention about it again here for those who have missed it.

‘Drum Machine’ is an animation which actually utilises 3D graphics but oozes the looks of 2D - kinda like cell-shading (combining Flash with some 3D component/software. Swift 3D anyone?). The hefty-earphone-wearing Geisha Kokeshi dolls form an orchestra with each one thumping out their own unique beat from their drums (bass, echo, etc.). Yep, that is all there is to it. I prefer not going into this animation too much because to do it justice, you must watch it yourselves. All I can say is, what makes this animation unqiue and good (for me) is the great music and super-minimalist styling: minimal use of colours, minimal movements.

Tokyo Plastic, the company behind the animation (I think they are based in London?), is a company that has produced amazing animations and characters time and time again. Because of their super-minimalistic approach, their animations appear all the more spectacular. Absolute class!

Their official website is in Flash and you’d have to explore the site and wait for lots of animations to finish (kinda annoying) before you’d find anything. If you have the time and mood, I highly recommend you explore the website - it is unique and amazing. I assure you, even though the website is already a few years old, it will still blow you away.

But for those who can’t be bothered exploring, you can see the Drum Machine animation here (still a bit of animation to watch and some clicking to do before it starts).

Oh, make sure you have your speakers turned on regardless of whether you are watching the animations or simply just browsing the website…. it’s a MUST! Pump up the volume!

Enjoy…
