Jagabee

Besides being a meat lover, I’m also a big fan of junk food, namely Coke-Cola and crisps (I’m a Brit therefore I don’t do the name potato chips). If I had enough at home, I can usually go through them all rather quickly. To say I love crisps, that really is understated… I’ve loved them since childhood (a packet a day after school lunch)!

Anyway, since I don’t have much updates recently, I thought I’d introduce Calbee’s Jagabee potato sticks to you. Is this a new product? Erm… to be honest, I’m not even sure. I’m more into the normal thin and rounded crisps as opposed to thick crunchy sticks. The only reason Jagabee caught my attention is via a tv show I watched last week.

The TV show is presented by a few comedians and practically has a different topic every week. Last week’s topic was something like “how oba-san are you?”. That pretty much translates into “how much of an old lady are you?”. It was a quiz to determine how out-of-date you are with “what’s in”. All of the contestants were female celebrities.

Basically, the two male presenters (along with others) would act out some scenes/scenarios inside a school or at home. They would play the characters of young boy schoolies along with a few girl schoolies and a teacher or a family member. There were probably 8 different scenes in the whole program, with each scene featuring a different “in” thing, ranging from the most “in” fashion magazines to the most “in” singers to the most “in” snacks. All of these “in” things have an empty label/sticker over the names of the products and it is for the contestants to name them. For example, the schoolies would gather together at a desk to read and rave over a magazine (mag name covered). Then the teacher would come along and ask what it is all about and the schoolies would be like, “Ah, this is about blah, blah, blah. It’s too ‘in’ for someone like you”. Then the scene would stop and the contestants have to write down what they think the name of the magazine is. If they get it correct, great, they’re “in”. If they get it wrong, obviously, they are out-of-touch with whats “in”. So you get the idea…

And yeah, Jagabee is supposedly the “in” crisps. So the next day, I headed of to FamilyMart. I had found the shelf that stored Jagabee but it was empty. There was also a hand-drawn sign (with lots of pinky hearts, clouds, etc) saying that these crisps are really popular and such right now. Seems like the tv show was right. I then headed to the supermarket but they didn’t even seem to stock them…

So anyway, I forgot about them until today when I came across them in FamilyMart again. And guess what? They had plenty in stock and that hand-drawn sign is gone! Hmmmm… maybe they were just riding on the wave of the tv show… whatever.

Now that I have finally got to try these, all I can say is… there is nothing special about them. They are just crunchy potato sticks with the peel still on them (not exactly new) and a bit salty in taste. Yep, that is all…
