The same thing happend to me all you do is go to where all you contacts are. Then where your name is next to it theres an arrow click on the arrow and at the bottom of the list there is options click that. then a screen comes up go down to privacy. There will be a thing half way down the page saying contact list next to that there is a view button click that all your conacts will be there that you had before msn lost them. Then all you do is right click them and click add to contacts then you have all you contacts back. Really simple to get them back. By the way, it’s all restored now. I have Adium running at work and I copied the user folder this morning. I’ve replaced it on my home Mac and… taa daa… you’re all back on my list! But yeah, defo will back up often.
