Nikon D300

Oh man! Now that the new Nikon D300 (pictured above) is just one week away till release (in Japan), I can feel the evil whispering in my ear, “Hey Ed, you’ve had that Nikon D80 for 14 months now. Isn’t it time to upgrade to a new camera that leans a little more towards the pro models?”.

Man, I hate this thing I have with all-things-latest-and-greatest. Why not go for the new Nikon D3 which is the creme-of-the-crop of Nikons (also coming next week)? Well, I know I am stupid but there is a limit as to how stupid I am. The Nikon D300 costs JP¥228,000 (body only) while the Nikon D3 costs JP¥578,000 (body only). Not to mention, I hardly know how to use my Nikon D80 as is, nevermind a D300. So yeah, the Nikon D3 is waaaaaaaay out of the question and budget.

The new Nikon D3

I also quite like the Canon 40D but the Nikon D300 betters it. That said, I do wanna see if the noise level has been improved on the new Nikons. Although Nikon is closing the gap on noise, Canon is still superior. Now that Nikon has moved to CMOS sensors from CCD (Canon’s use CMOS), I hope noise is better controlled.

Anyway, the ranking below is in order of what I think are the best DSLRs on the market between the top two pro-cam makers, Nikon and Canon. No. 1 being the sh*tz, no. 5 being the bare minimum. I didn’t rank these by price, btw (although it seems that way), but more by what they are capable of.

1. Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III (¥892,500) << the king of DSLRs!
2. Nikon D3 (¥578,000)
3. Canon EOS-1D Mark III (¥498,000)
4. Nikon D300 (¥228,000)
5. Canon EOS-40D (¥126,400)
(I’ve never looked into the Canon EOS-5D therefore I do not know where to place it in the ranking - so I left it out).

So there you have it - my lust is the Canon 1Ds MkIII, while the bare minimum in a DSLR I would go for is the Canon 40D.

The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III

As always with me, if I do get the Nikon D300, it’ll be on the first day of release. That would mean this coming Friday 30th November. If I don’t get it on that day (or during the weekend), it pretty much means I’ve fought off the temptation.

“Argh! I don’t need a new cam. I seriously do not need a new cam” << me hypnotising myself

14 months is a long time to use one camera. Time to upgrade.

Don’t give into temptation (again)!!! It’s Christmas time soon, and am sure you have nephews that wouldn’t mind a few things ;)

Rather than a new camera, you should lay down some yenz for a new lens. That 18-200 VR is pretty sexy… ;)
