iPhone 4

So, it’s not called iPhone HD as rumoured, afterall. It’s just plain and simple, iPhone 4. I like it!
- iPhone 4 – biggest leap since the original iPhone
- All new design
- Glass on front and back (scratch resistant), custom glass – bends without breaking
- Stainless steel frame
- Thinnest smartphone ever: 9.3mm thick, 24% thinner than current iPhone 3GS
- Second mic for noise cancellation
- Apple A4 chip
- Retina Display: 3.5 inch (same as current), 960×640 pixels, 326 ppi (300 ppi is limit of the human retina), 4x as many pixels in same amount of space. Pretty much has 78% of the pixels of an iPad right in the palm of your hand
- Bigger battery: 40% more talk time, 7 hours talk time. 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of WiFi browsing (802.11n), 10 hours of video. 40 hours of music. 300 hours of standby.
- Gyroscope sensor: 3 axis gyro for pitch roll and yaw, rotation about gravity, Gyro + accelerometer = 6 axis motion sensing
- New camera system: 1.75 micron pixel size in sensor, backside illuminated sensor, 5 megapixel camera, 5x digital zoom, LED flash, records HD video 720p at 30fps, LED flash can stay on during video recording
- FaceTime: video call, front and rear camera supported, portrait and landscape mode supported, no set up required- just make a phone call, iPhone 4 to iPhone 4, WiFi only (for now)
- iMovie for iPhone ($4.99): can export to 360p, 520p, and 720p. Movie recorded, edited, and rendered entirely on the phone
- iPhone 4 comes in black or white
- 16GB ($199) or 32GB ($299) storage
- June 24th launch, June 15th pre-orders
The whole package seems rather impressive but as usual, it’s industrial design that gives me orgasmic thrills. Unfortunately, due to the famous, ‘lost prototype‘, my thrills were not as heavenly as they could have been during the announcement today. But still, it is great to hear the man confirm what we pretty much already know (from the prototype). And… I LIKE IT!
One thing about the iPhone 4 that bums me out is the storage capacity which tops out at only 32GB. Yes ONLY 32GB. I mean, come on, this thing records HD videos… with all my music/movies and whatever else on the device, I really wonder how many minutes of HD video I can capture before I run out of storage. Still can’t understand why Apple didn’t utilise the 64GB chip (64GB on a single chip has been around for a month or two now, I think). If it’s cost related, as usual, I’m willing to pay more…
… oh well. June 15th, I’m gonna head off to SoftBank Omotesando to pre-order one.

Pricing really aint too bad…hmm
Oooh, shiny. I like my HTC phone though. :b I will be way jealous after I see one in person I bet!
Imma get me one of those, too. You have the 2-year subscription deal with Softbank, right? How does that work? You pay the difference and they give you the new phone for free with another 2-year contract?
Oh, yeah, and what happens to your apps? Do you have to pay for them again, or are they associated with your Apple Store ID?
And how about the early termination fee in Japan, it used to be “only” 10,000yen. Could you do something like that, buy it, then terminate?

Here’s how it works (my write up for when I switched from iPhone 3G to 3GS):
