Sony’s iPod docking speakers

CPF-IP001.jpg… the iPod Audio Docking Stationspacer CPF-IP001. Hahahahaha… Sony has finally surrendered to the iPod’s popularity. Sony should stop updating their MP3 players every 90 days - the amount of MP3 players (and digicams) Sony throws out in a year is crazy!

Anyway, the speaker is equipped with an ipod connector and is compatible with 1G and 2G Nano, 4G and 5G iPods, and the 1G Mini iPod. The speaker includes a subwoofer with a powerful S-Master amplifier for superior sound yet it is small and light enough to be placed in any room of your home. Of course, a remote is included.

To be honest, I like the look of these speakers but the price tag is rather heavy. Actually, come to think of it, if I ever do buy a pair of speakers for my iPod, it will be either Apple’s iPod Hi-Fi, or nothing. Hahahahaha… bet you saw that coming! I’m such a sucker for all things Apple… (^_^;)

Apple iPhone

aps_iphone.jpgWell, the much rumoured widescreen iPod, touch screen interface, etc., happens to be the new revolutionary Apple cellphone, iPhone. It runs Mac OSX and is basically the internet in your pocket! A combined widescreen iPod, mobile phone and internet communicator, is just 11.6mm wide, and with a touch screen (no keypad)! An incredible device!

To be honest, even from years ago, I didn’t think too much of an Apple cellphone. I thought, besides putting iChat on there, what else can they do? No way would they ever be able to beat some of the cellphone makers in Japan. Even today, before MacWorld kicked off, I still wasn’t excited about an Apple phone. But now, after seeing/reading about what it can do, I’m totally gobsmacked!! Apple has reinvented the phone, period! I so frikkin’ want one!!

All this bolds well for a new, wide-screen, multi-touch iPod! It has to be just around the corner!

apple_2007.jpg

That’s a pretty bold statement on Apple’s top page. We may expect big things this year from Apple? No idea but I’m expecting…

…big big things from myself this year. 2007 is definitely the make or break year for me. Damn, I’m scared yet excited!

New Core 2 Duo MacBook

c2dmb.jpgFollowing in the foot steps of it’s elder sibling, the consumer MacBook has now also made the jump to the Core 2 Duo CPUs from Intel.

Sometimes, I really wonder if I need a Pro model. No doubt, the MacBook Pros look better with the aluminum casing, more screen estate and better graphics card but since I design more websites than heavy-duty-printed-materials these days, maybe I don’t need the MacBook Pro for it’s better graphics capabilities. Screen estate, that is something a designer can never get enough of anyway therefore I will have to get an additional 23″ Cinema Display for hooking up to the laptop.

I also happen to be one of those idiots who are always lusting over new updated versions of everything. By getting a MacBook, I won’t need to fork out as much money as I would need for a MacBook Pro (literally double price) and when the time comes for me to sell it off, I won’t loose as much from the re-sale either.

Hmmmmm… definitely worth thinking about…

Full-screen iPod using touch-sensitive bezel?

touchpod.gif Hrmpf reports on a particularly revealing patent application from Apple that was published on October 26, 2006.The name of the patent application is “Electronic Device Having Display and Surrounding Touch Sensitive Bezel for User Interface and Control”. The patent describes and depicts a full-screen touch sensitive iPod very similar to the various Video iPod Mockups that have been floating around the web. The application was filed in June of 2006.

The focus of the patent is the incorporation of a touch-sensitive bezel (edge of screen) that can adapt to the screen contents to provide an input method for the user. Hrmpf suggests that the use of this non-screen are would eliminate many of the “smudge” and “scratch” concerns for a full-screen touch iPod.”

This makes total sense and has to be it! But I’m a little concerned if we will still be able to operate the unit via just one hand. Also, my old “touch sensitive” 3G iPod refuses to respond to my presses on a lot of occassions (-_-). Anyway… bring on the full-screen iPod!!

New MacBook Pro

ambp2.jpgFinally, the new MacBook Pros get the Core 2 Duo treatment! And Apple claims that it is up to 39% faster than its predecessor! Anyway, I wonder what took Apple so long to release these Core 2 Duo laptops.

Now that the new 15-inch is once again equipped with FireWire 800 and DVD-Dual Layer burning (these should never have been missing in the first place), I think there is no more reason for me to lust over a 17-inch model anymore. If I do get one of these laptops, it will be the 15-inch model along with either a 23″ or 30″ Cinema Display. This combo gives me the screen estate I need, and the portability when I need it (my previous 17″ PowerBook was great but the extra weight and inches in width really made a difference when I had to lug it around). But wait… there’s still no Intel-native Adobe Creative Suit! Damn, by the time Adobe releases it, the next MacBook Pro will probably be out! Sigh….

iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED

red4.jpgChoose the “iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition and Apple will give $10 of its purchase price to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa.

Volume, meet virtue
You make choices every day, from the clothes you wear to the music you play. Now making a choice means making a difference. The iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED holds up to 1,000 songs, 25,000 photos, and a little hope. That’s because $10 from every iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED sold goes directly to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. Which means your iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED sounds good and does good at the same time.”

Hmmmmmm… personally, I think it is better to donate the US$200 directly to the AIDS fund. Anyway, find out what is (PRODUCT) RED about.

Who is Jonathan Ive?

PICT2819_2.jpgAn article on Jonathan Ive, Vice-President of Industrial Design at Apple Computers, by BusinessWeek Online.

This is probably one of the better articles I have read on Jonathan Ive because it kinda sheds just-that-tad-bit-more light on Apple’s design team than any other article I have came across before, namely, how many people are in the so-called “small team” (I actually thought his team only consisted of about 5-6 people), who some of them are (isn’t this supposed to be a closely kept secret?), where they are from, etc., etc. The article is definitely worth your time to read even if you are not an Ive or Apple fan…

“The team, made up of thirty- and fortysomethings, has a definite international flair. Members include not only the British Ive but also New Zealander Danny Coster, Italian Daniele De Iuliis, and German Rico Zörkendörfer. “Its good old-fashioned camaraderie — everyone with the same aim, no egos involved,” says British fashion designer Paul Smith.

Most of Ive’s team live in San Francisco, and rumor has it that the starting salary for the group is around $200,000, some 50% above the industry average.
